Enhancing the 'infinite slope' model.Infinite Slope v. 3.0 screenshot.
"For very shallow, translational landslides, the infinite slope expression is as useful as any other method of slope analysis, and yields extremely good results. The engineer should not be put off by its simplicity."
(E.N. Bromhead in his book: "The stability of slopes") Infinite Slope is a free software developed to perform simple slope stability analyses adopting, and bringing out, the well known 'infinite slope' limit equilibrium analytical model. Go directly to: Download page. The infinite slope model is often considered a mere didactic scheme useful to explain slope stability analysis principles. But while some experts take into account only rotational or more complex failure mechanisms, often, landslides occur following the simple translational scheme considered by the 'infinite slope' model and often these shallow phenomena can transform into awful and deadly earthflows or mudflows. Supposing that the 'infinite slope' model is applicable to the slope (failure surface parallel to the ground, homogeneity of soil parameters along the slope, extent of the slope much greater than the thickness of the analyzed soil mass, etc...) the software adopts the limit equilibrium method (LEM) to evaluate the Factor of Safety at the critical slip surface or at a specific surface. It bases its potential on the immediate visual perception of the effects on the equilibrium conditions of the soil mass (forces, stresses, pressures, factor of safety, etc...) when a change to a geometric or a mechanical parameter is introduced. All the parameters are 'under the mouse' and a complete analysis is made easy and simple. Moreover, version 3.0 tries to help the user to evaluate a solution: excavation of a system of drainage trenches, construction of series of shear pile walls. Licensed as freeware it has been conceived to help students, civil engineers, geologists, and other experts to study simple geotechnical problems. Adopted units system is the International System of Units (SI): - N (Newton) for force and weight; - m (meter) for length; - Pa (Pascal) for stress and pressure. Implemented languages are: - English; - Italian. Discover more about Infinite Slope. Or go directly to: Download page. |

Understanding landslides Risk mitigation Landslides do happen Last landslides on Earth These government organizations have a great reluctance to carry responsibilities; they always want to be covered by something, and a factor of safety, that is something tangible. So when the general asks the captain: 'How about the factor of safety of the dam? Computers are incredibly fast, accurate, and stupid. Human beings are incredibly If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster Pre-design soils investigations are essential for all projects. You pay for a soils investigation, whether or not you conduct one. With earthquakes there is basically no warning. But advanced monitoring and warning of landslides can really help address the loss of life. |
